Out and about in Ithaca, and need to find a private bathroom? There’s an app for that!

Developed for Out for Health, a program of Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes, Pee In Peace is designed to locate gender-neutral and private bathrooms for those who need it, especially transgender and gender-non-conforming people who may have a specific need for a safe and private restroom. The listings have detailed notes including accessibility, cleanliness, hours of operation, changing tables, specific directions within buildings, and more.

We’re so excited to be a part of this project! Here’s a quick preview:

Download the app from iTunes using the Pee In Peace website or you can find Pee In Peace directly in the App Store.

Plans are being made to add other cities and to release the app for Android.

It’s not often that you get to witness an event like this… Ryan tipped us off that he was planning a top-secret surprise public marriage proposal to his sweetie Susan.

The plan went like this:

On May 1st you will want to arrive on the commons around 12:00pm or 12:15pm. When you first arrive on the commons you will be playing the role of a commons window shopper. Around 12:20pm everyone involved in my proposal plan will begin making their way to the center of the commons (in front of the Bernie Milton Pavilion.) Susan and I will already be in the center of the commons and the crowd will begin forming a complete circle around us. You’ll be able to identify me because I’ll be wearing a bright blue marching band jacket, a hat, and bells around my ankles. At 12:30pm my brother will sound an air horn notifying the crowd to get ready for the big moment. After the air horn sounds everyone will count to three while I’m kneeling to the ground. After everyone reaches three and I’m on the ground, the entire crowd, including me, will say, “Susan will you marry me!”

After we all propose, and Susan says yes, the crowd will disperse as if nothing happened. It is going to be an amazing day, one we will all remember for a lifetime.

Ryan asked us to record the event on our webcam, and we assembled this time-lapse footage for him (…our webcam records 1 frame every 15 seconds).

Spoiler — she said yes!

Not long ago we received an invitation to answer some questions about the content management system behind Ithaca Events (www.ithacaevents.com) which we developed for the Community Arts Partnership (www.artspartner.org). What we didn’t know at the time was that the story, which was to appear in .Net Magazine (www.netmag.co.uk), was only interested in CMS applications that could be used by any developer.

This certainly makes sense, as it could leave developers clamoring for WebTree with no way of getting hold of it. And, indeed, WebTree 3 is not available for other developers. Over the last couple of years, we’ve had a lot of requests, and this has led us to take the big big step with WebTree 4 of making it available to the developer community when it becomes available next Summer. You can keep abreast of all WebTree 4 developments at www.getwebtree.com.

Here is the the little story that could, after all:

Is the site ithacaevents.com built on a CMS and which CMS was used?

Yes! Ithaca Events is run off of a custom CMS based on our own WebTree CMS. It features a sophisticated event model to show off cultural events throughout Tompkins County. The CMS provides an extranet that allows event producers to manage their own event listings, and an intranet enabling the folks that run Ithaca Events to review and approve those events efficiently.

What is your site about?

Ithaca Events provides listings of cultural events throughout Tompkins County. We spent a lot of time considering how to make using Ithaca Events not only fast and easy, but also pleasurable. While you can do sophisticated searches for events on the site (http://www.ithacaevents.com/events/search?t=advanced), the emphsis is on making it easy and fun to browse for events by date, category, or attribute (via tag clouds). Visitors can create their own highly customized RSS feeds. Web site managers can also easily generate customized event widgets to place on their sites. In the end, though, it’s all about nurturing organizations that produce cultural events in the area.

Who designed the site?

The site was designed by the team at AWP (Ancient Wisdom Productions, http://www.awpny.com) under the vision of lead designer, Tyler Finck. AWP’s design approach takes advantage of the team’s diverse and unique range of expertise. To see more examples of AWP’s teamwork in action visit: http://www.awpny.com/projects.

Why did you pick your CMS?

We developed WebTree CMS really because we could not find a CMS that was both powerful and easy to use, and that suited our production process. Most CMS products out there are either too simple to be really useful in a wide variety of contexts, or too arcane and dragged down by feature-bloat to fit into a really streamlined production process, inflating development costs unnecessarily and making them too hard for most of our clients to use successfully. WebTree CMS was designed to deliver a wide range of features using a highly intuitive visual interface.

Our current version 3 of WebTree is built on Cake-PHP, making it highly portable and inexpensive to install and host. WebTree 4 is currently in development and will be powered by Drupal. Our goal for version 4 is to combine the power of the Drupal platform with the intuitive ease of use provided by the WebTree interface, then make the whole package available to other developers. More information at http://www.getwebtree.com.

What feature of your site do you feel makes great use of this CMS?

The mechanisms for finding, displaying and sharing events are really the heart and soul of Ithaca Events. While these were customized for Ithaca Events, they were built very much in the WebTree spirit. Let us know if you would like to see other examples of our work that do incredible things with WebTree straight out of the box.

What feature of your site pushes the envelope most in your opinion, or another way to ask is, what feature are you most proud of?

That’s tough. The event model itself sets Ithaca Events apart from most event listing sites. We also really pushed the envelope in terms of the information architecture that makes it so easy and fun to find events that interest you, browse for other events that share similar characteristics, and create custom feeds to inform you when new events you may be interested in are entered into Ithaca Events. And then there is the event producer extranet and administration intranet that site visitors don’t see.

So I suppose, it’s really the complete package that pushes the envelope. The CMS is powerful, but at the end of the day, CMS systems, no matter how good, don’t make good websites. Good websites are born from inspired ideas, careful planning, solid information architecture, creative design, elegant and reliable code, good content and clients that manage their sites effectively. I should add, on the other hand, that a bad or improperly deployed CMS can, almost single-handedly, bring down an otherwise viable website.

How did the CMS make this project faster, easier, or better?

In the case of Ithaca Events, the CMS just took care of so many basic functions related to managing the structure and content of the website that we could really focus most of our efforts on the customized elements that really make the site shine.

One of the things that has made WebTree CMS so successful for us is that it fits our highly structured production process like a glove. It means we can pay attention to all the little things that really show off our clients to the best advantage.
